Janice Davis Obituary

Janice Viola Davis, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday, November 11, 2024, at the Montgomery County Casey House in Rockville, Maryland. At 85 years of age, Janice lived a remarkable life filled with love, resilience, and adventure.

Janice was born on October 12, 1939, to Chester and her mother Beatrice Davis in Washington, D.C. Raised in the vibrant Northeast D.C. neighborhood, Janice grew up as a spirited and adventurous tomboy, enjoying games of baseball and softball. She was also a gifted artist who loved to draw, showcasing a talent that brought her joy and recognition. She graduated from Spingarn High School in the Class of 1957.

While living with her mother on 14th and H St. NE, Janice began her career as a dedicated worker to support her mother and three children. Her early jobs included roles as a cashier and waitress at People’s Drugstore and later at the Hot Shoppes Diner, and a cashier for the Hechinger Company. Her career began to flourish when she joined McLaughlin National Bank on 7th St, SW, where she was promoted to head teller and began supervising various branches throughout the area. In the early 1970s, she transitioned to WMATA (then DC Transit) as a sales cashier, a move that marked the beginning of a fulfilling 25-year career. In pursuit of professional growth, Janice made the bold decision to transfer to Los Angeles, California, where she rose to division sales manager. She eventually returned to Washington, D.C., to continue her career with WMATA until her retirement in 1999.

Janice’s personal life was as vibrant as her professional one. She was married to George Torrence and later to Robert Davis. A devoted mother to her three children, two sons and a daughter, Janice found great joy in her role as a matriarch. She was the proud grandmother of two and the great-grandmother of one. She also had her loyal companion “Joy”, who filled her days with so much energy and excitement.

Known for her love for entertaining and hosting, Janice’s home was often the heart of family gatherings during holidays and celebrations. She had a flair for fashion and charisma that could light up any room. Her diva charm and warm, friendly personality left lasting impressions on everyone she met.

After her retirement, Janice embraced her passion for travel. Whether it was visiting another state, exploring a new country, or enjoying time at a casino, she loved the thrill of adventure.  Traveling was her true passion.  Aruba held a special place in her heart and became her favorite destination, where she would go to relax and recharge, often traveling solo or with her cherished group of friends.

Janice faced life’s challenges with unparalleled grace and strength. She overcame cancer in 2013, but the battle returned in December 2023, presenting her with her most difficult journey. Despite several rounds of chemotherapy, her resilience and spirit never wavered. In late October 2024, she transitioned to hospice care, where she spent her final days surrounded by love and peace.

Janice leaves behind her loving family: her sons, Renee Torrence and Celestand Torrence; her daughter, Andrea Torrence; Granddaughter ReNeeta Reid; Grandson Anthony Torrence; Great-Grandson ReMar Reid; Daughter-In-Law Kimberly Torrence; Grandson-In-Law Raymond Nimox; Granddaughter-In-Law Krystal Nimox; Jervis Collins and Family, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

Janice Viola Davis will be remembered for her zest for life, her unwavering strength, and her boundless love for family and friends. Her legacy of kindness, elegance, and determination will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
