Esther M. Smith of Washington, DC, departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the age of 101 years. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. Smith, and was predeceased by her husband, Milton Smith and her son, Milton Smith, Jr. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Candy Smith; granddaughter, Janessa Smith; grandson Jarden David Smith; great-grandsons Deshawn and Davian Rasberry; great-granddaughters Layla and Maizee Smith; sister Naomi Rucker of Cleveland, Ohio; four brothers: Rufus (Glendonia) McKinney of Bethesda, Maryland; Charles (Lil) McKinney of Memphis, Tennessee; A. Lorenzo McKinney (DeLoris) of Fort Washington, Maryland; Ernest (Virginia) McKinney of Fresno, California; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smith was born on December 8, 1922, in Jonesboro Arkansas to George Dallas McKinney and Roseanna Thompson McKinney, the fourth of thirteen children. She came to Washington, DC during World War II to work in the federal government. She retired in 1979 from the Federal Trade Commission, where she worked as the executive secretary to the Commissioner. After retirement, Mrs. Smith continued her education and received a Bachelor of arts degree in social work from the University of the District of Columbia.
Mrs. Smith was an active and faithful member of Encounter Life Church where she sang and played the piano.
